SUMMARY:National Piping Centre Summer Adult Gathering
DESCRIPTION: Join the NPC Adult Gatherings in 2023\nThe National Piping Centre is bringing you a series of Adult Gatherings in 2023 for pipers aged 18+\,which have been designed to give a fantastic social learning experience. This year we will be running in person workshops  as well as online events. \nThe dates for our 2023 schools are: \nSummer Adult Gathering : 31 July-3 August\nAutumn Adult Gathering: 30 October-2 November \nOur schools will run in two timezones\, one for in person teaching and one for online students. The in-person school will run during the day UK time (9am – 5pm UK time)\, with the online school running in the evenings (3pm – 9pm UK time). There will be no option for online learning during the day\, or in person learning in the evening. For the online schools to run in 2023\, we require a min of 6 students to register. Teachers for each school will be announced ahead of the event. \nThe school costs £275 in person and £240 online for the four days. \nBOOK MY GATHERING PLACE NOW \nWhere will we meet?\nThe in person schools will take place at one of the two National Piping Centre locations in Glasgow City Centre or West End. This will be confirmed nearer the time of your school. For our online schools\, you will join us on Zoom each day for your day of tuition! Once you have registered\, we will be in touch with more information about the school and how you can log in each day. \nWhat will I learn?\nOver the four days there will be group lessons\, 1-2-1 tuition\, Masterclass workshops and more for pipers. Each piping student will be provided with a digital music pack so everyone will have new music to learn. \nWhat will the school cost?\nIt is £275 GBP to register for a place on one of our  in person schools and £240 GBP for an online school. Registrations will open shortly. \nWhat will my timetable look like?\nWe are just finalising the exact timetable and will update this soon\, but you can expect 1-2-1 lessons\, practice time\, masterclasses\, workshops\, new music and more. These will be similar for in person and online tuition. \nWho will be teaching me?\nEach school will have a different teaching line up\, from our world-class professional pipers. Check back nearer the time to find out who will be teaching your course. \nIs It for me?\nIf you are still unsure about if it is right for you\, we asked attendees at our recent school to tell us about their experiences and here is what they had to say: \n” Thoroughly recommend attending an adult gathering at least once in your lifetime\, I’ve done it twice and it resulted both times in a positive step change in my piping.\nWorld class instructors\, fantastic location\, and an easy and open way of teaching” – Attended in person in Winter 2023 \n“I found the whole Gathering experience absolutely brilliant\, being able to attend in person\, the staff and guest tutors were so down to earth and approachable\, all being World famous Superstar Pipers. Everyone of them brought fountains of knowledge\, new techniques for us to consider for our level of piping\, and all where so passionate about piping\, that most lessons ran over\, which is so infectious. I’ve attended one or two Gatherings before\, all of which were well worth doing\, but this has to be the best todate. I’ve come away with renewed enthusiasm for my piping. I’ve always said\, if the NPC says this is how to do it\, no one can argue with that. I’ve had an amazing time\, met some old friends and made new ones\, will be booking for Spring 23. ” – Attended in person in Spring 2022 \nBOOK MY GATHERING PLACE NOW \nHearing Protection\nThe National Piping Centre requires all students to use hearing protection at all times when playing pipes. Hearing protection is available for purchase in our shop or free of charge from the earplug dispenser in both our piping school venues.\nFind out more

Numerous activities\, are fun fair rides\, Inflatables\, Marquees hosting Country & Western/Line Dancing\, Children’s Folk Singing/Highland Dancing and a Ceilidh/Strip the Willow alongside a variety of food and drink outlets\, to entertain the crowds before the main Tattoo Metagama Event starts at 7pm.\n\n\n\nPerformances at the main event are varied with Lewis\, Lewis & Harris Youth\, Uist\, Sgoil Lionaclete\, Skye and Strathaven & District Pipe Bands joining the lead Pipe Band from Canada. Additional acts are travelling from throughout the UK.\n\n\n\nExpect to be mesmerised by Danny the Fire Performer\, a world class act from Somerset\, England who will have his own stage. Also billed are the Ragtime Dolls from Glasgow\, a fabulous 1920s-1940s inspired\, Female Close Harmony Trio with choreographed dance routines.\n\n\n\nThey are joined by Yee’s Hung Ga Kung Fu Academy in their spectacular costumes who have been recognised by the Martial Arts World as being champions in Lion Dance.\n\n\n\nAlyth McCormack\, with her Irish Band\, makes an exciting home return to Lewis. Alyth is a singer\, songwriter\, actor and filmmaker\, known for her pure voice and diversity. Raised on Lewis\, but now living in Ireland\, she has been the featured singer with the Chieftains for the last 15 years.\n\n\n\nSambayabamba is a Glasgwegian musical melting pot that has raised the roof around Scotland\, the UK and across Europe. They are an exuberant outfit with a heavy-weight live act including a thunderous 25 piece bateria and stomping brass section.\n\n\nAdditional artists\, a Mass Choir\, dancers and fireworks will complete the line up!\n\n\n\nTony Robson\, Lead Organiser said “We are preparing for an exciting International Event involving the whole of the Outer Hebrides\, from the west shore of Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis. SUMMARY:Stirling Highland Games
DESCRIPTION:Stirling Highland Games is one of central Scotland’s great annual cultural sporting events\, welcoming up to 8000 visitors annually. The event provides a great day out for visitors whilst also supporting the charity partner as a practical learning experience for young people. Stirling Highland Games can now trace its history back to the Stirling Chapmen of 1818 when the highland games included: ‘Tilting at the Ring’\, ‘Foot Races’ and ‘Horse Races’. \nStirling Highland Games not only showcases traditional Highland games competitions like tossing the caber and Highland dancing\, but it also offers visitors an affordable ‘festival style’ day out with lots to see and do including a Traders Village showcasing food and drinks producers as well as quality market traders; an on-site Heritage Walking Tour\, an Activities Challenge area for the kids; and some Creative Arts performances. \nThe games field is located within Stirling Sports Village and offers spectacular views over to the National Wallace Monument\, Cambuskenneth Abbey and Stirling Castle. As an approved Member of the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association\, we offer visitors a full programme of traditional Highland Games competitions to watch including Athletics\, Youth Running\, Cycling\, Highland Dancing\, Heavyweights\, long jump and triple jump and there are also several Pipe band performances spread throughout the day. \nVisitors are encouraged to take part in our Visitor Races on the running track and our Activities Challenge area is where the kids can enjoy giving several sports a go on an all-weather pitch including mini highland games.

SUMMARY:Lonach Highland Gathering 2023
DESCRIPTION:Lonach Games has announced that this year\, and for the next 50 years\, a generous donor has given £1000 towards the piobaireachd competitions. The date is Saturday\, August 26\, between the Oban and Inverness competitions\, so is a golden opportunity for pipers from all over to come to beautiful Strathdon in Aberdeenshire. Enter here before August 13 preferably\, although this year entries are accepted on the field. \n\n\n\nThe winner will receive £500 and the Charles Morrison medal. Second place will receive £300\, and third place £200. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n•Charles Morrison\nThe donation has been made by Ivan Reid in memory of his uncle Charles Morrison\, a man of music\, born 1899\, served in WW1\, emigrated to Canada before returning to his native land to work in the family grocers business.  He piped with the Lonach Pipe Band\, still a strong force today\, and he also played the fiddle\, the cornet and the saw.\n\n\n\nIn a programme note Ivan Reid writes: “In the days before television brought the curtain down on DIY entertainment\, Uncle Charlie and his fiddling friends would often gather to make music\, an impromptu concert in the store of the shop. His expertise in prising music from a crosscut saw\, held upright between the knees\, the blade twisted to various degrees and played with a bow was demonstrated on stage as a member of our local concert party\, The Strathdon Sparklers.” \n\n\n\nIt was Ivan Reid’s respect for his Uncle’s love of the music and the associated camaradarie which led to the gift being made. \n\n\n\nIvan added: “In years to come my wish is for pipers to mark on their calendar the fourth Saturday in August when in increasing numbers they journey to the arena in Bellabeg to compete in friendly rivalry. \n\n\n\n“My Uncle Charlie would have smiled saying\, ‘I like the sound of that’.”

DESCRIPTION:Douglas Gardiner\, President of the the Eagle Pipers’ Society made an announcement yesterday\, February 16\, about the Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner & Recital for 2023. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner & Recital Competition on Saturday\, August 26\, 2023. \n“The venue will be the Caledonian Hotel\, Edinburgh.  Dress code is black tie. Tickets are £60 each and can be bought on The Eagle Pipers’ Society website: The Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner | The Eagle Pipers’ Society\, Edinburgh. \n“The evening is currently Edinburgh’s only premier solo piping event and honours of one of our founding members.  It also provides a rare platform for the playing of 20th century piobaireachd.   The success of the dinner since its inception in helping to bring Captain John’s tunes into the popular competitive repertoire is illustrated by his tunes winning first prize at the Glenfiddich in 2019\, first and second prizes in the Bratach Gorm in 2021 and first prize in the Gold Medal at The Argyllshire Gathering in 2022. \n“We are once again indebted to the generous support of The William Grant Foundation.” \nhttps://eaglepipers.wordpress.com/

SUMMARY:Braemar Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Braemar Gathering is always held on the first Saturday in September in The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park in Braemar. \nWhile there have been Gatherings of one sort or another at Braemar since the days of King Malcolm Canmore nine hundred years ago\, the Gathering has been run in its present form since 1832. During much of that time large crowds have come each year to acclaim their Monarch as Chieftain of the Braemar Gathering. \nTraditionally\, the organisers of the Gathering were the Braemar Highland Society\, originally established as the Braemar Wright Society in July 1815 and granted Royal status by Queen Victoria in1866. It is the oldest surviving Friendly Society in the UK. \nSince 1848\, The Gathering has been attended regularly by the reigning Monarch and members of the Royal Family. The foot races at The Gathering are the world’s oldest\, having been organised on a regular basis since 1832. \nDuring this event\, you will get to experience the Massed Pipe Bands\, Heavy events\, Highland Dancing\, Tug-o’-War\, Track and Field\, Solo Piping and many other traditions and activities associated with the culture and heritage of the Highland Gathering in the heart of Scotland.
