SUMMARY:New Zealand Pipe Band Championships 2024
DESCRIPTION:• Canterbury Caledonian Society HPB celebrate their win in 2019. Photo: Susanna Buckton \nTāmaki Makaurau Auckland to play host for the 2024 New Zealand Championships \n\n\n\nEntries are open for the 2024 New Zealand Pipe Band Championships in New Zealand’s largest city\, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. \n\n\n“The 2024 ‘Nationals’ provides bands from across New Zealand\, Australia\, and from around the world the perfect opportunity to enjoy first-rate pipe band music in our biggest city\,” Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands Association President Iain Blakeley says. \n\n\n“The 2023 offering in Ōtautahi Christchurch exceeded all of our expectations\, and we are hopeful that the 2024 event will build on that. Auckland is the perfect location for many reasons – not only Auckland’s fantastic venues and array of hospitality options\, but as New Zealand’s major domestic and international hub for travel\, it makes attending the Championships much more attractive for many bands.”For those unable to attend the event in person\, we are pleased to say our world-class live stream will be available once again thanks to our partnership with 5Stream and Brassbanned. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This is the perfect opportunity for bands around the globe to come to New Zealand and experience the very best we have to offer.” \n\n\nThe contest will be held over two days on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th March\, 2024\, and bands can start registering their interest from today here. \n \n\n\n\n\nThe New Zealand Pipe Band champions for 2023 are: \n\n\n\nGrade 1 Champions – Canterbury Caledonian Society PB\nGrade 2 Champions – Hawthorn Pipe Band (Melbourne)\nGrade 3 Champions – City of Tauranga Pipe Band\nGrade 4A Champions – Scotch College Pipes and Drums (Melbourne)\nGrade 4B Champions – South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band\nJuvenile Champions – St Andrew’s College Pipe Band (A)\n\n\n\nFull results and music summary sheets from 2023 can be found here. \n\nThe 2023 contest was held in the North Hagley Park Special Events area\, which is just three blocks from the centre of the city\, and adjacent to the Botanic Gardens\, Canterbury Museum\, The Arts Centre and Christchurch Art Gallery. SUMMARY:Ratae Pipe Band Solo Piping Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Ratae Pipe Band was formed in 2022 and are based in Leicester. They are planning a fundraising concert of solo piping with Stuart Samson and Ben Duncan on Saturday\, November 18\, in Syston\, Leicester – see flyer below for details. \n\n\n\nThe band are led by Pipe Major Bryon Brotherton MBE who is ex-Pipe Major of Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Pipe Sergeant Syd Charles told Bagpipe.news: “Bryon originates from Leicester and when he left the army he moved back into the area and was approached to put a competing band together.  Our leading drummer\, Ed Latimer is also ex-army. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“The band was formed last year with the focus on competing and starting off in Grade 4B. We have different standards of players in the band\, some that have never competed\, some that are veterans at competing\, but also with a big focus on youth. We currently have five youngsters from the age of nine to 14 years old\, so we have a real good mix. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“As with any band we are always on the look out for new members of any age. Within our members there is a wealth of pipe band knowledge and musical experience that can be passed on correctly to help with the musical ability of the band.”

John Wilson\, where he rose to the rank of Pipe Sergeant.  He retired from the band in 1967. \nGeorge was well known in Ontario as a dedicated teacher of the pipes and a composer of many tunes.  He was a loyal supporter of the Niagara-Hamilton Branch of the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario. \nGeorge will be remembered fondly by his many friends and pupils.  His keen wit will be unforgettable to those of us who  knew him.  He was never without a story or wee joke. \nGeorge Sherriff’s unfailing support of many generations of young players has helped contribute to the legacy of successful piping in Ontario.  This contest is named in his honour.

When you enter the Zoom meeting\, there will be assigned breakout rooms for the different events. There will be a steward to help competitors navigate Zoom on the day. CLASP members can click into any of the named breakout rooms to listen to the competitions or if you are competing in that event. Each competitor will be given a time slot to compete in their Piobaireachd event and a separate time slot to compete in their Light Music event. (We will work around different time zones). \nThe order of play\, performance times and the selected tunes (for Grade 1 and Grade 2) will be published one week prior to the competition date on The CLASP website. For example\, ‘This is Mary MacLeod playing The Little Spree for The CLASP ‘Live online’ November 2023 competition’ and away you go\, with a bit of tuning if you need to (but not too much). If using a mobile phone to video your recording\, please put it on flight mode. \nLater that day\, you should upload your video to you tube as an unlisted video. A video link for Piobaireachd and a separate video link for Light Music (Including all Light Music events) should be emailed by midnight on the 11th November 2023 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nEvents:\nPiobaireachd – Grades 1\,2\,3&4/5 – Please note that Grade 4 pipers can opt to play a full Piobaireachd in Grade 3 if they wish (no points will be allocated for this) as well as Ground and next variation (which carry league points for grade 4).\n2/4 March Event – Grades 1\, 2\,3\,4/5\nStrathspey & Reel Event – Grades 1\,2\,3\,4/5\nJig Event- Grade 1\,2.3\, 4/5 \nPlease click on the link to see tune requirements for each grade/event- https://theclasp.co.uk/set-tunes/#requirements \n\nSome rules to read: \nCLASP Rules apply for all CLASP competitions https://theclasp.co.uk/rules-sanctioning/\nPlease wear Highland dress. This speech will also help the judges.\nYou must not edit your recording afterwards. \nUpload your recording to YouTube (unlisted) and send the link to clasp@thepipingcente.co.uk by 23.59 hrs (Scottish time) that day. When uploading your video link to You Tube\, you get a chance to give the video a name. Adding your name again (and the tune names in the description box) will also help the judges.\nYou’ll get a Crit sheet from the judges\, so carry on playing even if you make an error – the Crit can be very helpful for your learning/development as a piper.\nPrize winners will be announced two/three weeks after the competition date. You can arrive early\, and stay as late as you like\, but be on the screen with pipes up\, in the correct room\, at your performance time. Please keep your microphone muted\, and video turned off when entering breakout rooms. When Spectating it is best to keep your microphone muted also.

SUMMARY:Malin Lewis and Mairearad Green piping in RETURN
DESCRIPTION:Return is a piece for four speaking voices\, a string quartet\, two pipers and two drummers. It’s an exploration into where long poem\, ritual theatre and ceremony meet. \nIt weaves together and layers up text\, music and performance as a celebration of the wheel of the year\, of emerging and receding\, and the common ground of death and renewal that unites us regardless and inclusive of all faiths and heritages. \nIt speaks of cycles and returns\, of seasons\, elements and the beyond human realms and rhythms; of expansion and contraction at our base and at our back that refuses the violence of fractured whiteness\, patriarchy and linear consumer capitalism. It is a meditation on the need to both mark and lose all track of time; how we inhabit the greater whole and have it be frame\, container and guidance. \nReturn will be performed in the round\, and by candlelight in Govan & Linthouse parish church\, over the full moon (occurring at 9.24pm) on Saturday October 28th 2023. \nThe venue is fully accessible. \nPerformance: 20.45- 22.00. (Doors: 20.30). \nTickets (please book below): £0-30. Pay what you can. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/return-tickets-707676598757 \nReturn platforms women\, non-binary and/or trans performers\, and will be accompanied by program notes about the concept and construction of linear clock time\, of timelessness\, of marking time and connection to place. \nPerformers: \nVoices: Jj Fadaka\, Lisa Fannen\, Babs Nicgriogair\, Susannah Stark.\nStrings: Elena Inei (violin)\, Una McGlone (double base)\, Simone Seales (cello)\, Semay Wu (cello).\nPipes: Mairearad Green\, Malin Lewis.\nDrums: Eilidh Graham\, Amy Redford. \nJj Fadaka (she/her) is a feminist writer and workshop facilitator living in Edinburgh. Her debut album ‘Time Together (Hues And Intensities)’ out on Stroom\, was described by Noel Gardner in The Quietus as “a seven-song serving of gossamer dub-pop experimentalism” and at a live show by Jude Browning in MAP Magazine as “music suspending weightlessness and opacity with the unfathomable facets of existence”.\nhttps://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/time-together-hues-and-intensities \nElena Inei (she/her)\nElena Inei is a violinist and improviser based in Glasgow. She is a member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra\, Collective Endeavours and The New Strings Collective. Elena also collaborates with Barrowland Ballet’s intergenerational dance company Wolf Pack\, and plays in various other project based formations. \nUna MacGlone (she/her)\nUna works across improvisation\, jazz\, traditional and classical genres. Within Simone’s creative work\, they centre Blackness\, sexuality\, intersectional feminism and anti-racism. They believe Western Classical musicians are capable of making meaningful social change.\nsimoneseales.com \nSemay Wu (sē mā wo͞o) (she/her) works as a composer\, cellist/improviser\, and media/sound artist. Greatly influenced by improvisational frameworks\, Semay often uses interdisciplinary relationships to explore ideas of play\, through collaboration and spontaneity. Recent performances and recordings have developed as solo cello and electronics\, however\, Semay’s other works have found shape as video pieces\, performance/interactive-installations\, graphic scores\, as well as creating an online audio cookbook for Manchester’s communities. \nsemaywu.com \nMairearad Green (she/her)\nHaving grown up in the West Coast Coigach peninsula of the Scottish Highlands – an area steeped in culture and local traditions – Mairearad was introduced to folk music at an early age. Renowned for her deft and lyrical accordion style\, as well as her dextrous piping\, Mairearad is in great demand as a performer and composer. Many of her compositions are well known in the Scottish music scene. Among the favourites are ‘Maggie West’s Waltz’ and ‘Dram Behind the Curtain’. As a visual artist also\, Mairearad’s work can be described as impressionistic\, and a visceral response to the landscape she is so familiar. Malin’s long awaited debut album Halocline\, is named for the layer between salt and fresh water. Halocline is a sequence of compositions reflecting on the liminal spaces between Malin’s outer and inner worlds as a trans person. She’s been hitting guitars increasingly harder ever since. She finally realised the drumming dream when she joined SheBoom in 2009\, where she now teaches and leads that drumming ensemble. On guitar\, she’s currently co-fronting Sequence 369 and busting out riffs with They Theory. Previous acts include Electric Ladygarden\, Blood Of The Bull\, Touch And Go\, and Stotally Toned. SUMMARY:Braemar Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Braemar Gathering is always held on the first Saturday in September in The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park in Braemar. \nWhile there have been Gatherings of one sort or another at Braemar since the days of King Malcolm Canmore nine hundred years ago\, the Gathering has been run in its present form since 1832. During much of that time large crowds have come each year to acclaim their Monarch as Chieftain of the Braemar Gathering. \nTraditionally\, the organisers of the Gathering were the Braemar Highland Society\, originally established as the Braemar Wright Society in July 1815 and granted Royal status by Queen Victoria in1866. It is the oldest surviving Friendly Society in the UK. \nSince 1848\, The Gathering has been attended regularly by the reigning Monarch and members of the Royal Family. The foot races at The Gathering are the world’s oldest\, having been organised on a regular basis since 1832. \nDuring this event\, you will get to experience the Massed Pipe Bands\, Heavy events\, Highland Dancing\, Tug-o’-War\, Track and Field\, Solo Piping and many other traditions and activities associated with the culture and heritage of the Highland Gathering in the heart of Scotland.

SUMMARY:Capt. John A. MacLellan Memorial Dinner and Recital
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Gardiner\, President of the the Eagle Pipers’ Society made an announcement yesterday\, February 16\, about the Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner & Recital for 2023. Douglas said: “I am pleased to confirm The Eagle Pipers’ Society will once again be running The Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner & Recital Competition on Saturday\, August 26\, 2023. \n“The venue will be the Caledonian Hotel\, Edinburgh.  Dress code is black tie. Tickets are £60 each and can be bought on The Eagle Pipers’ Society website: The Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner | The Eagle Pipers’ Society\, Edinburgh. \n“The evening is currently Edinburgh’s only premier solo piping event and honours of one of our founding members.  It also provides a rare platform for the playing of 20th century piobaireachd.   The success of the dinner since its inception in helping to bring Captain John’s tunes into the popular competitive repertoire is illustrated by his tunes winning first prize at the Glenfiddich in 2019\, first and second prizes in the Bratach Gorm in 2021 and first prize in the Gold Medal at The Argyllshire Gathering in 2022. \n“We are once again indebted to the generous support of The William Grant Foundation.” \nhttps://eaglepipers.wordpress.com/

SUMMARY:Lonach Highland Gathering 2023
DESCRIPTION:Lonach Games has announced that this year\, and for the next 50 years\, a generous donor has given £1000 towards the piobaireachd competitions. The date is Saturday\, August 26\, between the Oban and Inverness competitions\, so is a golden opportunity for pipers from all over to come to beautiful Strathdon in Aberdeenshire. Enter here before August 13 preferably\, although this year entries are accepted on the field. \n\n\n\nThe winner will receive £500 and the Charles Morrison medal. Second place will receive £300\, and third place £200. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n•Charles Morrison\nThe donation has been made by Ivan Reid in memory of his uncle Charles Morrison\, a man of music\, born 1899\, served in WW1\, emigrated to Canada before returning to his native land to work in the family grocers business.  He piped with the Lonach Pipe Band\, still a strong force today\, and he also played the fiddle\, the cornet and the saw.\n\n\n\nIn a programme note Ivan Reid writes: “In the days before television brought the curtain down on DIY entertainment\, Uncle Charlie and his fiddling friends would often gather to make music\, an impromptu concert in the store of the shop. His expertise in prising music from a crosscut saw\, held upright between the knees\, the blade twisted to various degrees and played with a bow was demonstrated on stage as a member of our local concert party\, The Strathdon Sparklers.” \n\n\n\nIt was Ivan Reid’s respect for his Uncle’s love of the music and the associated camaradarie which led to the gift being made. \n\n\n\nIvan added: “In years to come my wish is for pipers to mark on their calendar the fourth Saturday in August when in increasing numbers they journey to the arena in Bellabeg to compete in friendly rivalry. \n\n\n\n“My Uncle Charlie would have smiled saying\, ‘I like the sound of that’.”
